How To Protect Your Eyes From Blue Light

What is blue light? Blue light is a color in the visible light spectrum that can be seen by human eyes. Blue light is a short wavelength, which means it produces higher amounts of energy.

One of the major causes of blindness is blue light, which causes macular degeneration. Macular degeneration occurs when photoreceptor cells in the retina die. The retina is the light-sensing nerve-tissue at the back of your eye and these blue light can penetrate all the way to the back of the retina. So when the retina wears down, they do not regenerate, “when they’re gone, they’re gone for good. Heres how you protect your eyes from blue light.

#1 Shield Your Eyes

Blue light is emitted everywhere, so it is impossible to avoid them. We have to understand what kind of blue light exists around us. Did you know the largest source of blue light is from the sun?

The sun emits a high amount of HEV (High-energy visible light) which can cause damage to both skin and eyes, so wearing UV ray sunglasses are recommended as the light from the sun is exposed all around us. UV rays glasses deflect all blue light as they have a photochromic lens which is an optical lens that darkens exposure to light of sufficiently high frequency, also known as Ultraviolet radiation.

#2 Reduce Screen Time

Although the sun emits the highest HEV, man-made blue lights such as laptops, indoor lighting, and mobiles. are considered to be more harmful. The number of times people spends using these devices and the proximity of these screens to their face has many opticians and medical practitioners concerned about possible long-term effects of blue light to the eye.

Looking at the screen continuously throughout the day is bad for eye health. It can cause eye strain, also known as computer vision syndrome. Stay away from any gadgets when you don’t need to and do not scroll your phone hours before heading to bed, because the light from the screen is so bright it can mimic sunlight, disrupt our hormones, and prevent us from feeling sleepy.

#3 More Lutein

Lutein has several beneficial effects, especially on eye health. In particular, lutein is known to improve or even prevent age-related macular disease (AMD).
Lutein is an eye vitamin known as a carotenoid that absorbs excess high-energy blue light and prevents it from reaching the light-sensitive cells in the eyes. These vitamins have antioxidants that slows down the progression of cataracts and AMD. Lutein are not naturally formed in the human body. They are synthesized by plants and generally found in high quantities in green leafy vegetables or can be taken in health supplements extracted from these vegetables. So it’s time to get some greens into your body.
