Acne in women above 40 usually appears as pink or red inflammatory bumps along the cheek, jawline, mouth, and chin. Sometimes, whiteheads and blackheads that developed from clogged pores can eventually lead to painful, pus-filled acne known as pustules.
As we age, our skin cell’s turnover rate decreases - renewing itself once a month and by 50, it slows down even more to between 45 and 90 days - leaving a layer of dead cells on the skin's surface. Additionally, the pores become larger as the Collagen layer stretches out, leading to more clogged pores and subsequent acne.
Other than that, diet can also play a significant role in deciding the fate of our acne's severity and healing progress. The 'western diet' particularly, may accelerate acne in our 40's. This type of diet includes food high in either sugar, saturated or trans fat, which triggers the body to release the hormone insulin. Having excess insulin can stimulate the oil glands to produce more oil and increase the risk of acne breakouts.
While this can happen at any age, the risk of
insulin resistance increases as we age, making adults over 40 more susceptible to acne breakouts due to insulin imbalances. A great tip to prevent a spike in insulin is by reducing the intake of high-glycemic food, such as pasta, white rice, bread, or sugary food. Instead, add more fruits, whole grains, and unprocessed vegetables in your diet. Foods that are high in antioxidants, Vitamin A, and Vitamin E, are also beneficial for the skin as they help reduce inflammation.
